The Lithuanian boys’ U-17 national team continued their run in the UEFA European Championship qualifying tournament in Scotland on Friday.
In their second match, head coach Nerijus Mačiulis’s side earned an impressive victory, defeating England 1–0 (1–0).
In their opening game, Lithuania fell 0–2 to Sweden, and on Monday they will conclude the qualifying round with a match against the tournament hosts, Scotland.
The top two teams in the group will advance to the A Division in the spring to compete for spots in the European Championship final stage, while the teams finishing third and fourth will play in the B Division next spring.
Friday’s match began on a high note for Lithuania. About halfway through the first half, Lithuanian defender Tomas Jonyla capitalized on an opportunity near the English goal and struck the ball into the net, giving Lithuania a 1–0 lead.
Coach Mačiulis’s players successfully held off England’s attacks for the rest of the half, maintaining their slim advantage going into the break.
In the second half, the Lithuanians continued to defend resolutely, preventing their opponents from scoring. Despite England’s efforts to break through, Lithuania stood firm, preserved their clean sheet, and claimed a remarkable victory.
